Workshops

We’re again offering a range of workshops for local amateur musicians, singers and photographers. These are opportunities to learn from experts and to up your game.

All workshops take place at St Peter’s by the Waterfront Arts Centre, except the photography workshop which will be held in Ipswich Town Hall and the Jive and Swing Dance workshop which will be at The Lait Dance Club.

All workshops cost just £10 and tickets can be bought from the St. Peter's by the Waterfront website.

Latin Jazz Workshop and Masterclass with Derek Nash and band members

Enjoy and learn about Latin jazz. If you play an instrument, bring it with you, or come along and play some percussion. Or just sit, watch and learn. An exciting and participative learning experience with nationally renowned musicians.

From Bach to Bird with Tomi Farkas

St Peter’s by the Waterfront, College Street, Ipswich, IP1 1XF

Tomi will introduce Bach as one of the most revolutionary composers of his time and explain his instrumental role in music’s melodic and harmonic development using examples of his work. He will then do the same about Bird (Charlie Parker). 2020 is the centenary of Charlie Parker’s birth.

Through some of their tunes, Tomi will lead you on a guided tour to discover the connection between these extraordinary musicians by improvising over their pieces. It is aimed at musicians of all levels with an interest in improvisation, on any instrument or vocals. Join us on this spectacular musical journey.

The Amazing Colours of Jazz with John Watson

Ipswich Town Hall, Cornhill, Ipswich IP1 1DH, UK

Award-nominated music photographer John Watson returns to the festival with a special workshop on creating photographs of jazz artists using colour in a dramatic way. Workshop open to all levels, from beginners to advanced. Professional equipment is not essential, but participants need cameras which can shoot at 1600 ISO or above, and must know how to turn off any built-in flash.

An opportunity to photograph a live band is planned as part of the workshop.

Beginners Jazz Improvisation with John Seeley

We are delighted to again welcome talented jazz educator John Seeley. John Seeley is a professional musician and a Clarinet, Saxophone and Music Theory Teacher. He has a Masters in music and over 15 years’ experience, specialising in Jazz, Classical and Music Theory. He teaches pupils of all ages and abilities from beginners to grade eight and conducts workshops with the Southend Jazz Co-op, and runs his own jazz and saxophone workshops.

Jazz for Singers with Tina May

Tina May, an international jazz singer who will be performing this evening at our Stars at St Peter’s gig, has led vocal workshops all over the world and most recently in Australia and China – as well as the UK and most of Europe. During her workshop, participants will encounter Brazilian and African music and rhythms as well as more familiar gospel, blues, jazz and swing repertoire. Come along, just bring your voice and maybe a song you like to sing (optional).

Jive and Swing Dance Taster Class led by Bruce Lait

Lait Dance Club, St Mathews Church Hall, Clarkson Street, Ipswich, IP1 2JD

Get into the mood for our gig by the Jive Aces this afternoon with this class led by a British champion dancer who has represented England at world championships numerous times. Bruce teaches over Suffolk and Cambridge but mainly in Ipswich, producing dance couples of all ages and grades who have become champions themselves.
